Life Lately – A Whole Month!

It was exactly one month ago today I published my post on Solitude.   That is the longest stretch I have ever gone without writing something, even if the something was nothing.   So, what have I been up to in this last month?  A lot of awesome and not awesome.

Let’s start with the AWESOME!

Pre-Thanksgiving Christmas Decorating.

Yes, it went up a solid week Pre-Turkey Day.

Judge away.

image

Dave’s Retirement.

After 43.5 years, my step-dad RETIRED from Eaton Corporation.   What a proud moment for us all!   Dave is a pure example of what hard work and dedication looks like.

.

Thanksgiving

Lot’s of family at the Swanson’s the Sunday before Thanksgiving.  Good food, drink and family fun.

image

.

Thanksgiving at Gr’pa Goecker’s.

The best part? We got my DAD to show up to!   It was an early Christmas Miracle – it’s been a few years since he has attended.

Love that crazy man.

image

And then… this happened.

image

Iowa vs. Nebraska Game, Friday, November 27th – Lincoln, NE.

It. Was. FREEZING but Oh. So. AWESOME!

image

.

We tailgated with a few friends while attempting to stay warm.    Clint had the right idea with his Carharts.   He looks like he is going to work, you say?  Ask him if he cared.  He was WARM!

image

.

Was I warm?

Semi-warm pre-game thanks to cuddle time with the girls.

image

…but NOT WARM mid-game.

image

.

Seriously.  23 and breezy.   Whew!  But, totally worth it for that Hawkeye WIN!

.

Chiefs Game – Sunday, November 29th

It was 7 degrees warmer than Fridays game, so it felt like a friggin’ heat wave.   The rain, however, was a bit of a damper on the atmosphere but not our spirits!   What a blast.

image

.

image

.

image

.

I even ran into my Brother and Sis-in-Law!  They are legit Chief fans; as in not sure they have ever missed a home game.

image

.

A successful run after TWO months of no runs (minus the trail run first of November).  I’ll get to that in the not-so-awesome section.

image

Group Date – December 11th

A group of us went out on the town for a fun Friday night.   Let’s just say we all had a grand time.  Some more than others. 🙂

.

Claire’s Birthday – Saturday, December 12th

Live music at Bogey’s West Bar and Grill for the birthday girls 35th closed out last weekends shenanigans!

image

.

Oh – and I am now officially a Master Trainer for the INSANITY brand too!   TurboKick and Insanity certifications coming up in Omaha, January 23rd and 24th.   So freaking excited to train some new instructors in these formats.   Insanity is already at capacity – how awesome is that?!  It’s going to be a great weekend! 🙂

Can’t make Omaha?  Join me in Knoxville, IA in February! 🙂   Email me at jordan.pirtle@yahoo.com.

.

So, what about the not so awesome?

Stupid back and hip issues.   On-going for years, but always self-correcting.   End of October I was nailed with incredible, debilitating pain, that even bending over to put my shoes on, or getting my toothbrush from the bottom drawer, was a painful process.  Heaven forbid I try to do a squat.  UGH!

Here we go…

  • 1 Chiropractor
  • 1 Orthopedic Doc
  • 3 Physical Therapists
  • 1 Massage Therapist
  • Laser Treatment
  • 2.5 weeks of ZERO workouts
  • 1 crabby girl who ate and drank her misery
  • 1 General Physician
  • 1 OB-GYN who listened to me complain because he’s been my doc for 8 years now and that’s just his thing to listen to crabby women (Thanks, Dr. Mark Carlson)
  • 1 MRI (again, thanks Carlson)

  • 1 Pain Specialist that injected me 8 times:

image

  • …that left me with bruises that I still have (and have grown quite impressively) a week later.

image

.

…And a partridge in a Pear Tree.

Am I better?  Yes.

Am I healed? Nope.

Can I teach classes again?  Yes.

Can I run again?  Tried once and it was a success. (see above)

Can I put my socks, shoes, pants on?  Not without some pain.

Can I sit comfortably?  Yes.

Can I stand comfortably?  I have to slowly get up and let my spine readjust for a second before I take off.

Can I do Yoga?  Nope – tried again and I just get stuck.

Will this ever go away?  Thinking no.

Thank goodness Champ gives me kisses to make it feel all better.

image

Yes, I am better then I was a month ago.  I couldn’t hardly do anything.  Now I can.  The pain is still there but not nearly as severe.   Am I able to explain it well enough without sounding like a pansy?  No.  It’s hard to explain.  It isn’t just a sore muscle.  Trust me – I know what that feels like.

#duh

Sore muscles you recover from, warm-up and push through.  I am not an idiot (like some people were thinking)

It’s more than that.

Leaning over to pick something up isn’t just garnering a sore or tight feeling – it’s painful.  Sometimes it’s more than painful in the fact that I physically just CAN’T.   Period.  My body won’t go that way.   When I end my classes with stretches I have to support myself in every single move.

The best comparison is that feeling when something feels like it’s going to snap, or break, or pop out of place RIGHT before it happens.

That is what I feel like all the damn time.

Again, yes it has gotten significantly better.  I can push through it to a point.

(People are so over listening to me, I get it)

(Try living with it and then talk to me)

So, today I am back to a Chiro.  The day I had my MRI, I was feeling friggin’ fantastic, of course.  <insert eye roll here for me>  Like ready to go run a halfsy or rock an entire hour of Insanity with zero pain!  YESS!  But, as a result, the MRI showed minimal disc bulging in L4 and L5 but nothing else.  NOTHING ELSE.

The next day after said MRI?  I had to grab on to the side of my bed to even roll over and then had to push my legs over the edge to stand up.   My body just wouldn’t do what I needed it to do.  Period.

And that is my life.  Great one day.  A 150 year old woman the next.

You tell me!

Tomorrow is our last day at work.  We are closed until January 4th.  I can’t begin to explain my excitement.   Lot’s of stretching, workouts, family time, pampering time, curriculum preparation for my certifications, fitness classes, learning new choreography, getting my diet back on track to drop these 10 gross pounds of extra garbage (thanks summer fun and my month of back depression) and whatever the heck else I want to do!  Bring it on!

Cheers!

Halloween 2015

Halloween 2014 was the first year Clint and I dressed up as a couple.  And it was awesome.

image

Trying to come up with a costume for 2015 was difficult.   I finally narrowed it down to a few ideas and let Clint do the choosing.

And the final verdict was…

image

70’s Disco, Baby

Clint’s outfit stole the show for sure!  The wig, the spray painted black beard, the bell bottoms, sparkly shirt, platform shoes with goldfish in them…

image

Finding an outfit for me that wasn’t the typical “boobs, legs and butt” costume that girls tend to gravitate towards was difficult.   Fortunately, I found my costume used on eBay after finding it sold out in every other Halloween store.

Score 1 for CHEAP!  Score 2 for subtle, cute and comfy!

image

.

We attended our friends Andy and Liz’s Halloween party (and Liz’s belated birthday party) Saturday the 24th.

image

This years party didn’t disappoint.  They know how to throw some good ones. 🙂

image

Liz, Me, Tyree, Regeana & Kimi

There were some pretty hilarious costumes amongst this group.   So thankful we have become friends with Liz and Andy.  They are a FUN couple to hang out with (even though Andy seems to ditch out every time we schedule a ride.  What’s with that Weise?  Fist bump, Liz for always being down) 🙂   Kidding.  Still mad love, kid.

We dig their circle of friends as well.  They crack me up.  It’s been a trip getting to know these guys over the course of the year at Halloween parties, Algona Rally, among a few other smaller group rides.

image

.

image

.

The boys, of course, couldn’t sit still so the potato gun came out to play.  Let’s just say this thing has extra power.  I don’t think there is a single thing that Andy builds that isn’t bigger and better than the average.  Average isn’t part of his vocab.

image

.

image

Beer pong, dancing, socializing inside and out by the fire, we all had a great time.

image

.

image

We ended the night winning a tie for best couple costume and called this Halloween party a success!

image

.

We continued the Halloween festivities on Saturday the 31st with Clint passing out candy to lil trick or treaters while I walked our neighborhood with the cutest Minion and his mommy, Briton and Claire.

image

Dang I love that little kid.  Such a cutie and TOTAL sweetheart.

We ended the night at the Reverb Lounge for our friend Asa’s tattoo shop hosted party.

image

Friends, Fun and another great weekend night.

Cheers to Halloween 2015!

Weekend in Review | October 16-18th

Cedar Rapids, Hawkeyes, puppy time and PBR sums up the weekend nicely.

The End.

.

image

.

Ok… a little more elaboration.

Thursday and Friday I was in Des Moines for a workshop so while the meetings were long, informative and stressful, it was almost like my weekend started super early.   Especially since I was done with Round 1 of meetings by 4pm on Thursday and was in my hotel room by 4:30pm.

I didn’t know what the heck to do with myself.

I teach a fitness class everyday of the week after work.

No class to teach.

I don’t normally turn a TV on until after 7pm.

TV on, 4:30pm.

So confusing!

image

.

Jordan Creek Mall was less than a mile away… hmm.  Yep.   Shop, of course!

Purchase?  1 pair of shoes.

What I wanted to purchase?  3 pairs of shoes.

Good job, Jordan.  Good job.

Friday

Meetings and then I picked up the hubs from the MegaBus stop.

image

Yep, you read that correctly.   We had made plans to be in Cedar Rapids this weekend, long before my meetings were scheduled.  The LAST thing I wanted to do Friday afternoon was drive all the way BACK to Omaha, pick him up and then back track to Des Moines and on to Cedar Rapids the same day.  Uh, no.

Lucky for me riding the Megabus was a bucket list item of my very weird husband.   He was more excited then a kid on Christmas morning!

image

We grabbed a late lunch at Buzzard Billy’s downtown Des Moines (so good, check it out) and then made our trek to the Sullivan’s for the weekend!

Never-mind the Iowa City reference.   I am fully aware we were slightly North.   Spare me.

image

Saturday

Time for the Sully’s annual Hawkeye party!   Food, beer, friends, games, bikes, shenanigans.

Molly’s begging level: Expert.

Once the game was over (Oh hey 7-0 season, Hawks) the boys needed entertaining, so out came the toys.

Neighborhood rats.

image

.

Saturday night ended at a neighborhood watering hole where we listened to tunes, questioned a few of the regulars and snapped Kyle, who was back home in Omaha, that we needed some grand-dog time.  😉

image

Sunday

Thanks to my ever nervous belly (at an all time high the last month – woah) I failed to sleep a whole lot, so at 4:30am I talked myself into waiting until a more acceptable hour for the majority of the human race (5:20am) to wake my husband up and ask him if he wanted to sleep in the Jeep.

?

Asking that kind of question at that hour gifts a weird look in return.

This bed is comfy, thanks.  😉

But, my ever-so-awesome-never-complains-or-questions-my-decisions husband got up, packed his crap and out the door we semi-quietly went at 5:35am, locking the door behind us.

And then, the text to get back IN the house happened.   Who leaves their cell phone on the floor?

Not me, folks.  Not me.

Clint says sorry, guys.

Back in Omaha by 9:30am!  WINNING!!!

…which meant a little time with Kyle

image

And his pup Buddy Randall

image

Who so desperately wanted to play with Sasha and she was having none of that, naturally.

image

.

These Boys. ❤

.

I finished my Sunday with a fresh wash and wax for Black Beauty and then some much needed down time and relaxation.

Cheers!

The Weekend in Review

It’s the second week of October and Nebraska is rocking on the weather!  We took full advantage and stayed outside for the majority of the time too!  Zero complaints from this girl!

Friday the hubs picked me up from work and we headed to Clarinda so he could take a tree down for the Gilmore’s.   My husband co-owns and operates Walkup Tree Service here in Omaha and in the many years he and I have been together, I have never actually watched him work, so it was fascinating and equally as terrifying watching him physically climb up the tree and dangle up there.   A single rope, harness, spikes on his boots and up he went.

image

This photo only shows him about 1/4 of the way up and I was already having a mild panic attack.   Heights and I aren’t exactly good friends.

image

Once the tree came down the guys finished putting up a pretty sweet zipline across the property.   The girls were schooling Clint on how this whole thing works.

image

After we watched a few people take a pass on the zipline we headed out for some good ol J’s Pizza and then finished the night at our nephew Connor’s football game.  It’s been since the early 2000’s that I’ve been to a football game in Clarinda so it was pretty fun to see the cheerleaders, band and kids play as well as see some familiar faces in the crowd!

image

Saturday morning was lazy and absolutely delightful for me.  Last Saturday was my first certification as a Trainer, and while I had an absolute blast, it was nice to have this weekend to decompress!  Around 2pm we set out on the bikes with another couple.   We met up with Liz for a drink in Lake Ohana, had dinner at Classic Cafe in Malvern, IA and closed out the night at the 21st Saloon back in Omaha.  And, surprisingly, I kept the phone put away except for one single shot of the bikes before we headed back to Omaha.   Shocking, I know!

It’s quite ok to put it away and enjoy the company of friends! 🙂

image

.

Sunday I woke up with a raging headache and a serious need for some H20.   Didn’t do the trick, but a Bloody Mary sure did! 🙂  Tyree and I spent the early part of the afternoon at JunkStock, of which was my first and also last experience.

image

Cool stuff, fun vibe and far too overwhelming for my brain to handle.  HA!   Ended the afternoon having a few patio cocktails and catching up with Tyree before heading home to hang with the hubs and pups.  Perfect afternoon.

image

.

image

.

Tonight was supposed to be spent in Lincoln at the Def Leopard concert, but we unfortunately, backed out.  Clint has a big day at work tomorrow and I have a presentation to give to staff at 8am.   Spending the rest of my evening putting finishing touches on it so I am ready to rock tomorrow!

image

I hope you all had a great weekend doing whatever it was you wanted with whoever it was you wanted to spend it with.

Cheers!
