Life Lately | April 2016

Hi Friends!   I was inspired this weekend by my girl Katie over at Yellow Mango Life to start blogging again.  She took a year off and I missed her updates!  When I saw that little notification come up in my inbox that she had a few new posts up, I jumped for joy.  She’s back!  And with the CUTEST little addition to her family.  Go check it out!

So for me… where do I even start?  Here we go!

Clint’s Birthday – January

The annual Des Moines trip for Clint’s Birthday, aka Winter Party, ensued.  A riot as normal.

Master Classes – March

The first two weeks of March I spent traveling to Northwest Iowa and Red Oak, IA to offer free TurboKick and INSANITY Master Classes.  Offering Master Classes is a way to spread the format love across the States and to notify folks of upcoming certifications.  Always a great way to spend a day!  Want me to come to you?  Hit me up and let’s work it out.  Bonus?  I don’t charge for Master Classes! 😉

St Patrick’s Day Shenanigans

…with my morning INSANITY crew at the YMCA!  I didn’t get to drink a green beer on St. Pat’s day this year because at 7pm, I was boarding a plane for California.

Master Trainer Newbie Bootcamp – California – March 18th-20th

Master Trainer Newbie Bootcamp.  A time for Master Trainer’s within their first year as an MT to come together, learn, workout, learn some more, get pushed, learn some more, repeat, repeat, repeat.  It was an experience to remember.  It was hard, it was rewarding, it was eye opening, enlightening and humbling.  I made new friends, connected with my 2015 Ambassador audition group, met some of the most influential folks in the fitness industry and learned from some of the best of the best.   I look forward to future bootcamps when I am not the newbie!  🙂

image

Master Trainer newbie bootcamp was the culmination of a year long learning experience for me.

February 2015: Auditioned in Colorado to become a Master Trainer.
March 2015: Entered the 6-12 month master trainer ambassador program to start the learning and training process.
March 2015: Advanced into the fast track program for TurboKick.
May 2015: booked my first TBK certification as a trainer
June 2015: Cancelled my first certification. 😕 I wasn’t ready. There are times in life when you have to know when to push through something and when you have to pull back. I wasn’t mentally prepared to offer my own certification. I am hyper critical. Hyper aware. Hyper sensitive. I knew going into the certification wasn’t in my best interest, my future instructors or the companies. I chose more time to continue to hone my skills and craft.
October 2015: Hosted my very first TurboKick certification as a trainer. I finally did it.
2016: hit the ground running with five certifications completed, an added format of INSANITY and many more certifications on the horizon.

What a CRAZY 3 days of intense training, education and fun with fellow master trainers and ambassadors facilitated by some of the best MT’s and format/industry experts in the business.

Sarah.

I officially met Sarah in California after speaking with her for a few months prior.  I have grown so close to this girl through this experience.  She is genuine, loyal, honest and you always know what you are getting with her.  She and I continue nearly daily conversations and use each other to bounce ideas off of, talk through scenarios and build each other up.  I dig her.  She’s my jam.

April

Time with Friends – Erin was back for a few days.  The three of us were roomies 10 years ago.  TEN years ago I moved to Omaha and these chicks took me under their wild and crazy wings.  Then Erin left us and we were forced to grow up. HA!  It’s always fun to see her when she comes back.  My oh my have our get-togethers changed.

Wine and Junk Run – Saturday, April 17th

Sara owns and operates SW Iowa Primitives, Antiques and Furniture in Emerson, IA.  Each Spring and Fall she does a tour of wineries and shops in neighboring towns.  Each stop requires a signature or stamp from the owner, you hit each stop and make your way back to the shop for food and prizes.  It’s a great way to bring business to the small communities, find unique items and enjoy a day with your friends.

And if you have friends like mine, we definitely make it a day to remember.

Present Day!

There you have it… a quick recap of a few highlighted moments over the last few months.  Today was a day of housework, meal prep, dog snuggles, an afternoon Harley ride with my man and now evening downtime.  Cheers to a great week and maintaining at LEAST a weekly blog update. 🙂  No promises, folks. No promises.

Life Lately – A Whole Month!

It was exactly one month ago today I published my post on Solitude.   That is the longest stretch I have ever gone without writing something, even if the something was nothing.   So, what have I been up to in this last month?  A lot of awesome and not awesome.

Let’s start with the AWESOME!

Pre-Thanksgiving Christmas Decorating.

Yes, it went up a solid week Pre-Turkey Day.

Judge away.

image

Dave’s Retirement.

After 43.5 years, my step-dad RETIRED from Eaton Corporation.   What a proud moment for us all!   Dave is a pure example of what hard work and dedication looks like.

image

.

Thanksgiving

Lot’s of family at the Swanson’s the Sunday before Thanksgiving.  Good food, drink and family fun.

image

.

Thanksgiving at Gr’pa Goecker’s.

The best part? We got my DAD to show up to!   It was an early Christmas Miracle – it’s been a few years since he has attended.

Love that crazy man.

image

And then… this happened.

image

Iowa vs. Nebraska Game, Friday, November 27th – Lincoln, NE.

It. Was. FREEZING but Oh. So. AWESOME!

image

.

We tailgated with a few friends while attempting to stay warm.    Clint had the right idea with his Carharts.   He looks like he is going to work, you say?  Ask him if he cared.  He was WARM!

image

.

Was I warm?

Semi-warm pre-game thanks to cuddle time with the girls.

image

…but NOT WARM mid-game.

image

.

Seriously.  23 and breezy.   Whew!  But, totally worth it for that Hawkeye WIN!

image

.

Chiefs Game – Sunday, November 29th

It was 7 degrees warmer than Fridays game, so it felt like a friggin’ heat wave.   The rain, however, was a bit of a damper on the atmosphere but not our spirits!   What a blast.

image

.

image

.

image

.

I even ran into my Brother and Sis-in-Law!  They are legit Chief fans; as in not sure they have ever missed a home game.

image

.

A successful run after TWO months of no runs (minus the trail run first of November).  I’ll get to that in the not-so-awesome section.

image

Group Date – December 11th

A group of us went out on the town for a fun Friday night.   Let’s just say we all had a grand time.  Some more than others. 🙂

image

.

Claire’s Birthday – Saturday, December 12th

Live music at Bogey’s West Bar and Grill for the birthday girls 35th closed out last weekends shenanigans!

Oh – and I am now officially a Master Trainer for the INSANITY brand too!   TurboKick and Insanity certifications coming up in Omaha, January 23rd and 24th.   So freaking excited to train some new instructors in these formats.   Insanity is already at capacity – how awesome is that?!  It’s going to be a great weekend! 🙂

Can’t make Omaha?  Join me in Knoxville, IA in February! 🙂   Email me at jordan.pirtle@yahoo.com.

So, what about the not so awesome?

Stupid back and hip issues.   On-going for years, but always self-correcting.   End of October I was nailed with incredible, debilitating pain, that even bending over to put my shoes on, or getting my toothbrush from the bottom drawer, was a painful process.  Heaven forbid I try to do a squat.  UGH!

Here we go…

  • 1 Chiropractor
  • 1 Orthopedic Doc
  • 3 Physical Therapists
  • 1 Massage Therapist
  • Laser Treatment
  • 2.5 weeks of ZERO workouts
  • 1 crabby girl who ate and drank her misery
  • 1 General Physician
  • 1 OB-GYN who listened to me complain because he’s been my doc for 8 years now and that’s just his thing to listen to crabby women (Thanks, Dr. Mark Carlson)
  • 1 MRI (again, thanks Carlson)

  • 1 Pain Specialist that injected me 8 times:

image

  • …that left me with bruises that I still have (and have grown quite impressively) a week later.

image

.

…And a partridge in a Pear Tree.

Am I better?  Yes.

Am I healed? Nope.

Can I teach classes again?  Yes.

Can I run again?  Tried once and it was a success. (see above)

Can I put my socks, shoes, pants on?  Not without some pain.

Can I sit comfortably?  Yes.

Can I stand comfortably?  I have to slowly get up and let my spine readjust for a second before I take off.

Can I do Yoga?  Nope – tried again and I just get stuck.

Will this ever go away?  Thinking no.

Thank goodness Champ gives me kisses to make it feel all better.

image

Yes, I am better then I was a month ago.  I couldn’t hardly do anything.  Now I can.  The pain is still there but not nearly as severe.   Am I able to explain it well enough without sounding like a pansy?  No.  It’s hard to explain.  It isn’t just a sore muscle.  Trust me – I know what that feels like.

#duh

Sore muscles you recover from, warm-up and push through.  I am not an idiot (like some people were thinking)

It’s more than that.

Leaning over to pick something up isn’t just garnering a sore or tight feeling – it’s painful.  Sometimes it’s more than painful in the fact that I physically just CAN’T.   Period.  My body won’t go that way.   When I end my classes with stretches I have to support myself in every single move.

The best comparison is that feeling when something feels like it’s going to snap, or break, or pop out of place RIGHT before it happens.

That is what I feel like all the damn time.

Again, yes it has gotten significantly better.  I can push through it to a point.

(People are so over listening to me, I get it)

(Try living with it and then talk to me)

So, today I am back to a Chiro.  The day I had my MRI, I was feeling friggin’ fantastic, of course.  <insert eye roll here for me>  Like ready to go run a halfsy or rock an entire hour of Insanity with zero pain!  YESS!  But, as a result, the MRI showed minimal disc bulging in L4 and L5 but nothing else.  NOTHING ELSE.

The next day after said MRI?  I had to grab on to the side of my bed to even roll over and then had to push my legs over the edge to stand up.   My body just wouldn’t do what I needed it to do.  Period.

And that is my life.  Great one day.  A 150 year old woman the next.

You tell me!

Tomorrow is our last day at work.  We are closed until January 4th.  I can’t begin to explain my excitement.   Lot’s of stretching, workouts, family time, pampering time, curriculum preparation for my certifications, fitness classes, learning new choreography, getting my diet back on track to drop these 10 gross pounds of extra garbage (thanks summer fun and my month of back depression) and whatever the heck else I want to do!  Bring it on!

Cheers!

South Page High | My Teaching Years

Do you ever look back on your life and marvel at how fast it has gone and how much has changed?  Do you look back in fondness or yearning?   I stumbled upon one of my old scrapbooks tonight and holy flood of memories.

Did You Know?

Once upon a time I was a teacher for a very small community in Iowa.

Once upon a time my life revolved around music, instruments, chord structure, choreography, 60+ hour “work” weeks and lots of amazing, smart and talented kids.

image

.

For two years I served as the Director of Bands and the 5-12th Grade Vocal Music Teacher for South Page High School located in rural College Springs, Iowa.

.

image

.

In addition, for three years I served as the Coach for both the Cheerleading and Dance teams.   I started Coaching in 2003, when I was still in College full-time finishing my music degree.

I loved those girls and those teams.

image

.

Those two years of teaching and coaching were some of the best years of my life and also some of the most challenging.  I learned so much about myself as a leader, as a colleague, as a mentor, as a spouse and as a person.

I have nothing but fond memories when I look back.

I was 23 when I started at South Page.  Young, naive, impressionable, fresh and ready to devote all my time to these kids.

They were my everything for 3 solid joy filled years.

.

image

.

I loved my classroom at the end of the building.  I loved having that back door open, bringing in the freshness of the outdoors any chance I could.   I loved that my room connected to the gym, the stage and my own back storage room full of music from years and years before my arrival.

These students brought so much LIFE to those years.

Homecoming and their accompanying themes were always a hit, case in point by all the costumes.  Nearly every kid took pride in participating.

image

.

I really appreciated how small the classes were at SP.   Total enrollment at South Page ranged between 240-275 during my years there.

Those small classes gave me a chance to make mistakes and not have them seem so big.  It was a chance for us all to learn together.

image

.

I loved the relationships built with fellow teachers and students.  Jodi was my GIRL and also a great mentor to me.  Her teaching best practices were always one step ahead.

I remain in touch with many of the students still to this day.  In fact, I have had a great time sharing photos to many of their FB walls this evening.   Mostly for my pleasure and their dismay.  🙂

image

.

Summer band camp always brought the worst heat and humidity.  Two years of marching band out in the streets in the early mornings with 7-12th grade students was quite the experience.  But, looking back, I actually kind of miss it.  If I could be a part time helper to a small Iowa town marching band, I’d probably due it in a heartbeat.

Note:  When I say part-time, I really mean occasionally.  When I want to.  Like, maybe once a fall.  😉

I had strong leaders in the Marching Band.  From my drum major, Allison, to my drum core led by Lowell and Eric.   I still laugh at the impatience a simple “Left, Right, Left” could bring to a person after days on end of 6:45am street marching practices.

image

.

The Cheerleading Squads grew strong over the three years.  We lost a few as they graduated and gained more as the ages moved up.

image

They agreed to my crazy 6:30am practices and in return we saw their stunts grow larger, their basket tosses flew higher, and their confidence and skill set grew by leaps and bounds.

Their relationships and sense of team pride was some of the strongest I had ever seen.  For the size of district we were, we had a reputation.  A reputation of powerful young women who proved Cheerleaders were tough.   All you had to do was look at their stunts.

Shining stars, I tell ya.

image

.

image

.

Three years of Homecomings, Pep Rally’s, Proms, Concerts and Movie Nights.  My schedule was never dull.   I lived for it!

South Page was full of spirit and pride.

image

.

The Dance Team was a step out of my comfort zone.   I won’t ever consider myself a dancer.  I do well with choreography, but free style?

Leave me out of it.

I took this challenge on with full force and am so thankful the girls went along with me and my crazy ideas.

image

↑The First Ever South Page Dance Team↑

.

image

.

Just like the Cheer Squad, the Dance team evolved over the years as well.   What a joy it was to see the variety of girls gain confidence during the audition process and throughout the seasons.

image

.

From my young 5th grade kiddos to my Seniors, each one of these kids has a special place in my heart.

image

.

I learned a lot about being a leader from many of these students.  Some were wise and mature beyond their years.

image

.

Even when they couldn’t manage to be serious.

image

Game Nights were some of my favorite!  Between keeping up with the game, cueing the pep band at the right time, executing the Start Spangled Banner with respect, carefully monitoring the cheerleaders during stunts and running the sound for the dancers, I was never sitting still.

But, it was really those leaders I spoke of before that really pulled it off.  I was just the talking head and moving hands. 🙂

.

image

.

image

.

PROM was one of my last big events before my time at South Page came to an end.  I couldn’t have asked for a better group of Juniors to work with.   From decorating the gym for photos, to decorating the buses for our trip to Brownville, NE  and the time spent organizing the details for the 4 hour riverboat ride (while trusting I wouldn’t have to dive in after any pranksters), I gained respect for many of those kids.   Of course, there were some who pushed the limits, but who didn’t at that age?   Hey, all I cared about was making it back to the High School before After-Prom when they would no longer be my duty.  😉

image

.

The last concert I would ever have at South Page was incredibly bittersweet.   Our concerts always took place a few days after Prom so our stage was always decorated to the nines.   It added a level of magic to the whole event.  Especially for my last one.   We had a great set for both the band and choir.  I even had the drum line do one last show to put their skills on display.  They had grown so much that year and I was so incredibly proud.

image.

I broke it to my students early May of 2006 that it would be my last month with them.  Leaving South Page was a very hard decision for me to make, but absolutely the right one.  I mentioned earlier that those years at SP were some of the best, but also some of the most challenging.   My personal life had taken a turn, I had learned more of who I was and what I wanted in life, the direction of South Page was moving opposite of what I could handle and a move to the city was the right thing for me to do.

And so the decision was made.

image

.

My kiddos made my last days some of the absolute BEST.  Between the signs, cards, presents and hugs, I never felt more loved and appreciated.

image

.

My years at South Page are very special to me.   I look back now and have nothing but warm, fond feelings for the time spent there.

To the students of South Page High,

Thanks for being some of the best students I could have ever had and for teaching me more about myself then you could ever imagine.

                                                                                                                          Cheers,

                                                                                                                                     Jordan

Halloween 2015

Halloween 2014 was the first year Clint and I dressed up as a couple.  And it was awesome.

image

Trying to come up with a costume for 2015 was difficult.   I finally narrowed it down to a few ideas and let Clint do the choosing.

And the final verdict was…

image

70’s Disco, Baby

Clint’s outfit stole the show for sure!  The wig, the spray painted black beard, the bell bottoms, sparkly shirt, platform shoes with goldfish in them…

image

Finding an outfit for me that wasn’t the typical “boobs, legs and butt” costume that girls tend to gravitate towards was difficult.   Fortunately, I found my costume used on eBay after finding it sold out in every other Halloween store.

Score 1 for CHEAP!  Score 2 for subtle, cute and comfy!

image

.

We attended our friends Andy and Liz’s Halloween party (and Liz’s belated birthday party) Saturday the 24th.

image

This years party didn’t disappoint.  They know how to throw some good ones. 🙂

image

Liz, Me, Tyree, Regeana & Kimi

There were some pretty hilarious costumes amongst this group.   So thankful we have become friends with Liz and Andy.  They are a FUN couple to hang out with (even though Andy seems to ditch out every time we schedule a ride.  What’s with that Weise?  Fist bump, Liz for always being down) 🙂   Kidding.  Still mad love, kid.

We dig their circle of friends as well.  They crack me up.  It’s been a trip getting to know these guys over the course of the year at Halloween parties, Algona Rally, among a few other smaller group rides.

image

.

image

.

The boys, of course, couldn’t sit still so the potato gun came out to play.  Let’s just say this thing has extra power.  I don’t think there is a single thing that Andy builds that isn’t bigger and better than the average.  Average isn’t part of his vocab.

image

.

image

Beer pong, dancing, socializing inside and out by the fire, we all had a great time.

image

.

image

We ended the night winning a tie for best couple costume and called this Halloween party a success!

image

.

We continued the Halloween festivities on Saturday the 31st with Clint passing out candy to lil trick or treaters while I walked our neighborhood with the cutest Minion and his mommy, Briton and Claire.

image

Dang I love that little kid.  Such a cutie and TOTAL sweetheart.

We ended the night at the Reverb Lounge for our friend Asa’s tattoo shop hosted party.

image

Friends, Fun and another great weekend night.

Cheers to Halloween 2015!
