Life Lately – A Whole Month!

It was exactly one month ago today I published my post on Solitude.   That is the longest stretch I have ever gone without writing something, even if the something was nothing.   So, what have I been up to in this last month?  A lot of awesome and not awesome.

Let’s start with the AWESOME!

Pre-Thanksgiving Christmas Decorating.

Yes, it went up a solid week Pre-Turkey Day.

Judge away.

image

Dave’s Retirement.

After 43.5 years, my step-dad RETIRED from Eaton Corporation.   What a proud moment for us all!   Dave is a pure example of what hard work and dedication looks like.

Thanksgiving

Lot’s of family at the Swanson’s the Sunday before Thanksgiving.  Good food, drink and family fun.

image

.

Thanksgiving at Gr’pa Goecker’s.

The best part? We got my DAD to show up to!   It was an early Christmas Miracle – it’s been a few years since he has attended.

Love that crazy man.

image

And then… this happened.

image

Iowa vs. Nebraska Game, Friday, November 27th – Lincoln, NE.

It. Was. FREEZING but Oh. So. AWESOME!

image

.

We tailgated with a few friends while attempting to stay warm.    Clint had the right idea with his Carharts.   He looks like he is going to work, you say?  Ask him if he cared.  He was WARM!

image

.

Was I warm?

Semi-warm pre-game thanks to cuddle time with the girls.

image

…but NOT WARM mid-game.

image

.

Seriously.  23 and breezy.   Whew!  But, totally worth it for that Hawkeye WIN!

image

.

Chiefs Game – Sunday, November 29th

It was 7 degrees warmer than Fridays game, so it felt like a friggin’ heat wave.   The rain, however, was a bit of a damper on the atmosphere but not our spirits!   What a blast.

image

.

image

.

image

.

I even ran into my Brother and Sis-in-Law!  They are legit Chief fans; as in not sure they have ever missed a home game.

image

.

A successful run after TWO months of no runs (minus the trail run first of November).  I’ll get to that in the not-so-awesome section.

image

Group Date – December 11th

A group of us went out on the town for a fun Friday night.   Let’s just say we all had a grand time.  Some more than others. 🙂

.

Claire’s Birthday – Saturday, December 12th

Live music at Bogey’s West Bar and Grill for the birthday girls 35th closed out last weekends shenanigans!

.

Oh – and I am now officially a Master Trainer for the INSANITY brand too!   TurboKick and Insanity certifications coming up in Omaha, January 23rd and 24th.   So freaking excited to train some new instructors in these formats.   Insanity is already at capacity – how awesome is that?!  It’s going to be a great weekend! 🙂

Can’t make Omaha?  Join me in Knoxville, IA in February! 🙂   Email me at jordan.pirtle@yahoo.com.

So, what about the not so awesome?

Stupid back and hip issues.   On-going for years, but always self-correcting.   End of October I was nailed with incredible, debilitating pain, that even bending over to put my shoes on, or getting my toothbrush from the bottom drawer, was a painful process.  Heaven forbid I try to do a squat.  UGH!

Here we go…

  • 1 Chiropractor
  • 1 Orthopedic Doc
  • 3 Physical Therapists
  • 1 Massage Therapist
  • Laser Treatment
  • 2.5 weeks of ZERO workouts
  • 1 crabby girl who ate and drank her misery
  • 1 General Physician
  • 1 OB-GYN who listened to me complain because he’s been my doc for 8 years now and that’s just his thing to listen to crabby women (Thanks, Dr. Mark Carlson)
  • 1 MRI (again, thanks Carlson)

  • 1 Pain Specialist that injected me 8 times:

image

  • …that left me with bruises that I still have (and have grown quite impressively) a week later.

image

.

…And a partridge in a Pear Tree.

Am I better?  Yes.

Am I healed? Nope.

Can I teach classes again?  Yes.

Can I run again?  Tried once and it was a success. (see above)

Can I put my socks, shoes, pants on?  Not without some pain.

Can I sit comfortably?  Yes.

Can I stand comfortably?  I have to slowly get up and let my spine readjust for a second before I take off.

Can I do Yoga?  Nope – tried again and I just get stuck.

Will this ever go away?  Thinking no.

Thank goodness Champ gives me kisses to make it feel all better.

image

Yes, I am better then I was a month ago.  I couldn’t hardly do anything.  Now I can.  The pain is still there but not nearly as severe.   Am I able to explain it well enough without sounding like a pansy?  No.  It’s hard to explain.  It isn’t just a sore muscle.  Trust me – I know what that feels like.

#duh

Sore muscles you recover from, warm-up and push through.  I am not an idiot (like some people were thinking)

It’s more than that.

Leaning over to pick something up isn’t just garnering a sore or tight feeling – it’s painful.  Sometimes it’s more than painful in the fact that I physically just CAN’T.   Period.  My body won’t go that way.   When I end my classes with stretches I have to support myself in every single move.

The best comparison is that feeling when something feels like it’s going to snap, or break, or pop out of place RIGHT before it happens.

That is what I feel like all the damn time.

Again, yes it has gotten significantly better.  I can push through it to a point.

(People are so over listening to me, I get it)

(Try living with it and then talk to me)

So, today I am back to a Chiro.  The day I had my MRI, I was feeling friggin’ fantastic, of course.  <insert eye roll here for me>  Like ready to go run a halfsy or rock an entire hour of Insanity with zero pain!  YESS!  But, as a result, the MRI showed minimal disc bulging in L4 and L5 but nothing else.  NOTHING ELSE.

The next day after said MRI?  I had to grab on to the side of my bed to even roll over and then had to push my legs over the edge to stand up.   My body just wouldn’t do what I needed it to do.  Period.

And that is my life.  Great one day.  A 150 year old woman the next.

You tell me!

Tomorrow is our last day at work.  We are closed until January 4th.  I can’t begin to explain my excitement.   Lot’s of stretching, workouts, family time, pampering time, curriculum preparation for my certifications, fitness classes, learning new choreography, getting my diet back on track to drop these 10 gross pounds of extra garbage (thanks summer fun and my month of back depression) and whatever the heck else I want to do!  Bring it on!

Cheers!

Following Through and Making it Happen

Remember way back in February when I made this post about facing fears?

never-doubt-yourself

.

And then this post happened about facing that fear and kicking its butt?

image

.

Well, it’s here!  Tomorrow, October 3rd is a culmination of it all.

I will be hosting my very FIRST Certification as a Trainer.

A Beachbody LIVE trainer

mastertrainer

.

The roster is set, the attendance is higher than I had anticipated (a GREAT thing), my orientation email has been sent and the last steps of my preparations are in FULL swing.

  • Notes
  • Binders
  • Note cards
  • Schedule
  • Memorization
  • Tons of routine practicing
  • Gift-bags
  • Phone conversations
  • Text messages to my mentor….

holy moly

I have a lot yet to do today to set my mind at ease, but excitement has definitely taken over.

By 4pm tomorrow I will have completed my very first, and definitely not last, training!

As of tomorrow 4pm I will officially earn my Master Trainer title.

As of tomorrow I will have fulfilled a GIANT dream that I almost didn’t follow-through on.

keepgoing3

As of today, I am so thankful I didn’t quit or give-up.

A special thanks to the hubs, family and friends who saw me through this.  Who listened to my doubts, pushed me past them and didn’t let me give in or give up.    Who listened to me when they probably got sick of it over the last several months.   For the sweet phone calls, text messages and outpouring of love these last two weeks when it finally became real.  Like REAL, real.  And to them for understanding how real it is to me.  Sure, it’s just another day.  Sure, there will be many more.  But, the first of anything is always extra special.

I truly have the BEST support system anyone could have.

Cheers to the next journey!

Pirtlefest Shenanigans | Years Past

↓Friends in Low Places | Garth Brooks

.

Pirtlefest

Redneck debauchery at its finest.

slp14

.

What: horse racing, 4wheeler riding, good country living, ice cold beer drinking, bullshitting, moonshine swigging, redneck fun.

Where: Pirtle Ponderosa

When: A Saturday in September – every year.

Why: Why Not?

pfest14

.

pfest22

.

Each year Pirtlefest evolves, but the common denominator year after year is good old fashion fun with family and friends.

Last year Clint had this harebrained idea to cook the pig in the ground.   His idea of roughing it?

Who knows…

What I do know is it was quite the process for the guys.   Steps included a giant hole in the ground, multiple rocks buried to trap heat, wood for the fire, Wilbur wrapped in foil, burlap and fencing, machinery to bury the big guy, dirt to cover and hours to cook.

pfest4.

2015 Pig?   Definitely getting cooked in a roaster.

Let’s just say the smell of that big guy after he was pulled from the ground was enough to run a skunk off.

Folks come and go during the day as they please.  We are a laid back kinda crowd.

002.

Chilling with friends on a nice fall afternoon?

Yes, please!

How about a little 4-wheeler and dirt bike riding?

Sure!

Golf carts with gun racks are perfectly acceptable as well.

Did you think otherwise?

slp78.

How about a little human fooseball?

slp61

.

Bring your shin guards and competitiveness.

Rules don’t seem to apply with this crowd.

slp

pfest25

Of course there is always the horse racing, obstacle course maneuvering and sledding.

What kind of party would it be without that kind of fun?

slp1

Need to burn past regrets?

Bring it out.  We’ve got ya covered.

But of course– the best part is simply the quality time spent with everyone involved.

Always good conversations, good people and great memories.

Labor Day Weekend | 2015

image

Three. Day. Weekend.   It’s like music to my ears.  Or was, anyway.   How does it always go by so fast?  Sigh…. and thus we begin our “Working for The Weekend” grind again.

Friday started with a Harley ride to work, as those opportunities are rare.  Being a girl, in a professional work environment, with 20 miles between home and work plus the need for gym attire, Harley attire, work attire… blah blah blah.  You get the picture.

Friday was a jeans day, with a fun Division meeting for the first two hours of my day (complete with t-shirt design competition), a few hours of work and an hour of Wellness Promotion (shameless plug for my fitness classes I start offering to staff on the 14th too)

😉

image

FAW (Friday After Work) I was able to meet up with my girl Heidi for an impromptu early evening ride to Waterloo for some cocktails, live music and girl talk.   It was the perfect Friday night.

image

Saturday

Clint was in C-town doing more Pirtlefest preps, so I decided to take on a few projects around the house.

Project A: Choose a new front door color.

image

.

An early morning trip to Home Depot and I was well on my way.

image

.

… with the Iowa game on and dogs monitoring my work, of course.

image.

image

Before | After

image

I am in love!

imageChamp digs it too.

image

.

I’d love to change the hardware and light fixture above the door as well, but maybe another day.

In between coats of primer and paint I also spent a great deal of time trimming up all of the rose bushes and random crap growing in front of our house (Project B).

…And by trimming, I actually mean cutting down.

Oops.

Have I mentioned I hate clutter?  Guess that transfers outside too.   I hate rose bushes.

Project C: String patio lights over our unfinished back patio.

:p

image

Earlier this summer, Clint and company poured a sidewalk and half of our patio in the back.   It wasn’t intentionally done this way, but measurements were a little off… NBD.   Eventually it will extend to where the dog houses are and curve back around.  Our fire pit (which is sitting on top of the ground for now) will go in the middle.

I thought patio lights would look sweet over the top of this, so did a little mock-up, made a trip to Target for lights and started stringing.

So, how about a little math?

$48 of lights +  secure starting point +  connecting point for the four strands + a little too tight of a stretch on the last strand = a big glassy mess.

Just add it to my pile of trash for the weekend.

image

Nightfall came quickly so the dogs and I had to call it a night.  Clearly they were exhausted after all that work.

.

Sunday

An insanely humid morning equaled a less than enthusiastic start to my day.  5 miles sounded daunting in that heat, so I pulled out my witty tank to garner some laughs out on the trail.   I always wave/nod/acknowledge anyone I meet while out on the trail, so figured adding a laugh would help keep me going, if not them too.

Side Note: Please excuse me while I hop on my soap box for a sec.  I rarely wear this tank, along with a few other “wordy” tanks due to how low they sit on the chest.  I have to roll it into my sports bra a gagillion times to get it pulled up.   I think showing the girls while working out is just weird.  I know – this is probably all just me as I find boobs annoying (anyone feeling awkward yet) but I just find it a little odd to have cleavage showing when at the gym, running, teaching a group x class, etc.   Are we there to get a helluva workout in, or to get looked at?  Mmmmhmmm… that is all.    *Hopping off my personal opinion soapbox.

image

 .

After my long and disgustingly hot run, I hopped in an ice cold shower… hello happiness… and then Clint and I stupidly (influenced by my stupidity) went back out in the 100 degree heat for a ride to Lake Ohana.

image

A few ice cold brews and we made our way back to Omaha.   Moonshine was producing, which is a very manual project, so you can’t leave it unattended for long without risk of ruining an entire batch.  Not cool.

image.

We ended the night with fire grilled grub and a few more beers.  Pretty great Sunday, if you ask me!

imageThat fire pit sure works great sitting awkwardly out of the ground.  🙂

MONDAY | Labor Day

image

Clint was gracious enough to bring an entire grocery bag full of apples back with him from Clarinda, so I filled up my day with baking.

Three batches of Apple Pie Bars with Salted Caramel (all made from scratch) and a large batch of Apple Crisp smelled up my kitchen.   One batch went to our neighbor, Carol, who broke her leg a few weeks back.  Another batch went to our neighbor, Harold, who hands-down, might be the coolest cat you could meet.  He is an older gentleman, with a love of old cars, rolled white t-shirt sleeves and strategically combed and slicked back hair.  Harold and Clint have become quite the garage companions when talking old cars and tinkering on old trucks.

image

Recipe coming soon!

Another hot-as-hell evening short run followed by dinner and blogging has me thinking bed time soon.   Back to the daily grind tomorrow!

image

Hope you all had a wonderful three day weekend with family, friends and doing whatever the heck you wanted to do!

Cheers!
