Thoughts From The Road- Actions and Reactions

Friday I rode my baby to work.  Morning rush hour is always a little hectic, so I tend to ride a little more aggressively than normal.  Getting across 4 lanes of traffic requires it if you want out of that caged madness.

It comes as no surprise anymore when I get cut off by a cage where the driver isn’t paying attention or they mis-judged the distance between my two wheels and their four wheels.  Usually this action on their part creates a judgmental, very aggressive reaction on my part.  I am not afraid to admit that I get angry, pull up beside their window (when the opportunity allows) and yell not very nice things or wave my arm aggressively at them.   I can’t help it.

I’m a goner if I get hit.  They’ll most likely walk away.

I get pissed.

Friday morning, it happened to me crossing the Missouri River into Iowa.

I saw it happening before he actually moved into my lane.  I saw the slight shift in his direction and instinct told me to back off a bit.  He quickly realized what he had done when he actually looked into his mirror and saw my headlights.  He hesitated halfway between lanes before finally committing to continue moving into my lane.

In that instant I talked myself out of pulling up beside him and unleashing.

It happens.  People don’t look thoroughly before changing lanes.  People get distracted and move before signaling.

We ALL do it.

Instead of my normal reaction, I made the decision to pull up beside him and look into his window to see if he’d acknowledge me.

And I am so glad I did.

Right away I could see him waving in the window and mouthing he was so sorry, his wife watching from the passenger side.

I wasn’t in danger, I saw it happening, I was able to adjust my speed and react. And even if I didn’t have time to back off, I would have had plenty of room to move over on the shoulder and get past him.

I was ok.  He was ok.

I took that moment to look directly at him, move my fingers to my eyes and back to his, he nodded and mouthed sorry again.  I gave a half smile … I mean I don’t want to be overly friendly and ruin my bad ass vibe, you know. 😉 … waved and moved along.

I could have freaked out on him.  But, what good would it have done?  He’d have either felt worse or just made a judgement call that I was a crazy chick with an attitude problem.

Sometimes our reactions are necessary and justified, and this definitely doesn’t mean I am going to react as calmly the next time.  However, there are situations, like Friday, where a little bit of reflection before acting can prove to be beneficial.

So, Cheers to you, fella for acknowledging you made a mistake.  I hope that our little moment helps you remember to always double check before switching lanes.

‘Till next time.

Holstein Harley Davidson Women’s Run

Holstein Harley Davidson

Omaha, Nebraska

All Women’s Run – May 31st, 2014

group

Each year, Holstein’s Harley puts on a Women’s Only cruise.   It’s a tradition that is holding steady and each year more and more women turn out for it.

Our 2014 route took us through Oakland, Iowa -> Harlan, Iowa -> Neola, IA -> Council Bluffs, IA.

leaders

The event is organized by Kristen, Holstein’s Motorclothes Manager.    She put together a flawless event this year, covering every detail imaginable.  From creating a route with the least resistance, fuel stops perfect for those with peanut tanks, solid 25 mile or more distances between each stop, lunch details to raffle prizes – the girl had it all.

Unfortunately, Kristen’s father passed away unexpectedly the day before the event.   As Kristen dealt with the loss of her father, numerous women stepped up to the plate to help out in anyway possible.   Kristen’s dear friend, Suze, reached out to Tyree to help her lead the pack and Tyree in return asked for my assistance as the route hit up all the Iowa bars that I was used to.   Several ladies stepped up and helped with the check-in and announcement making.

A biker community banding together – one of the many reasons I love the two-wheeled life.

Good people.

After we dedicated the ride to Kristen and her dad, we loaded up and headed out.

Thanks to Holstein Harley for the first three pics

There we go!  Front of the pack!

Watch out fellas.   Us chicks know what’s up.

Thanks to the Riders for Christ in the road blocking assistance.  We made it out of Holstein’s safely!

The first goal of the ride was to just get out of the Omaha Metro area.  We crossed the bridge into Iowa and stopped briefly to get the girls back together again.   Street lights in Omaha are abundant!

C-Town, Girlfriends, Wedding, Garage Parties and Harley Time- The Full Weekend Recap

Monday is tough in and of itself.

A Monday after a full weekend of excitement is just cruel and unusual punishment.

 I want to go back!

Take Me Back!

Friday

Kicked off my Friday afternoon right with this darling little chick.

image

I allowed myself only one though as I had to be in Burlington Junction, Missouri for an evening wedding rehearsal for a former student of mine.

image

I have to say that it is a really cool experience to see these kids grow up, become adults, marry and start families.

After rehearsal I met up with my two besties in my hometown.  Love getting to spend time with these two chicks.  We thoroughly enjoyed each others company, as you can see.

image

Just kidding.  This was a SnapChat 101 Lesson.

We hung out until around the 11:30pm hour and then went our separate ways.   No worries, I stayed at my mom’s house.  No driving back to the city for this chick!

Saturday

Thanks to my super awesome internal alarm clock, I was up and moving around 6am.  Apparently my mind doesn’t care that my body was now going on only 17 hours total since Wednesday night.  Rude.

I laced up the ol sneakers and took off for a little under 4 miler.  It was good to see the streets of Clarinda again in the early morning hours.

image

After the run, I took over moms kitchen and made some Clif Bars.   If you haven’t tried the Clif recipe yet, you are missing out.  Find it here.

Isn’t her kitchen so cute?   Very “This Old Home”.

She works magic outdoors too:

Next up?  Wedding!

Such a beautiful, loving, down to earth couple they are.   Thanks for letting me be a part of it, Jess and Alan!

Saturday night I met up with my hubby for some yummy J Bruner’s action.   And then closed out the night in our friends’ garage.   Some of the best nights are the low-key easy ones.   Jade and Kayla are definitely two of the best friends we could ask for.

image

I mean, just LOOK at the way Clint is gazing at Jade.  It’s true love, folks.

And, a group selfie to close out the night.   Two of our other friends were having their 40th birthday party over in Iowa City that weekend, and since we were all stuck in Clarinda for various reasons, we wanted to send our love and support.

We are just that thoughtful.

Sunday

Thanks again to a killer internal alarm clock and the inability to fall back asleep for no more than 10 minute increments, I hit the road back to Homaha.

But first, a pit stop at my girl Sara’s.  I just love these two.

sara

Once back in Omaha, my chrome baby and I set out on a solo 150 mile ride through the Nebraska terrain.

And it was the best kind of date to close out the weekend.

CHEERS!

Oh, You Ride a Motorcycle?

We’ve all been there.  We meet someone new and we attempt to start a conversation.  Often the conversation starters default to career choice or the weather.  Other times the topic might be connected to something more personal, like what the person is wearing or what they are driving.

And then you have the conversations revolving around the fact you ride a motorcycle.

While I  respect the attempt at striking up a conversation, there are just some things better left unsaid.

In the spirit of keeping this lighthearted, take my opinions with a grain of salt

and a shot of tequila.

Keep Talking

Top Annoying Questions to Ask A Biker

1. Can I Sit on It?

Checking out motorcycles is what we do.  Whether at the store, outside a restaurant, bike night or a rally; bikers walk around, look at others rides, dream, take mental notes, make wish-lists and maybe even snap a few pictures.  Guaranteed you will find someone making lovey-dovey looks at another persons bike.

That is where the admiration ends.  Don’t be that guy and ask:

“Can I sit on your bike?”

Maybe next time I get that question I should answer with —>  “Sure you can sit on it!  Can I have the keys to your car as well?  I’d love to get in it, maybe take a few selfies behind the wheel, turn the radio on, roll the windows down… you know”.

2. Did You Ride Today?

Maybe a few coworkers know you ride.  Or, you’re at the grocery store and you have some Harley-Davidson gear on.   Outside, it is noticeably miserable and not ideal riding weather.    Naturally, someone will ask

“Did you ride today”

…..as they chuckle and give you a little elbow nudge.

Yep, buddy.  Sure did!

3. “YOU know how to ride THAT?”

Oh, no, no, no.  Don’t be silly!   It has this cute little button that when I push it, the bike magically goes VROOM down the interstate in the direction I want it to go.

4. A little too much power for a woman, don’t you think?

What does that even mean?

Please, let me introduce you to these lovely ladies, who, as a matter of fact ride their own machines.

Now, what was that question, again?

5.  So You’re An Organ Donor.

I don’t know how many times I have heard “You know that doctors and nurses call bikers organ donors don’t you?”

Great!  But, please tell me how riding a motorcycle makes me any more of an organ donor then a runner, or a cyclist, or a person walking across a major intersection, or a person changing their tire on the side of the road?   At any time freak accidents happen.  Aren’t we all essentially walking organ donors?

But, thanks for the heads-up on what other people say about us.  I was very concerned.

.

6. Don’t Crash

Well shit… There goes my plan for the evening.

And Lastly:

7. What About All the Bugs That Hit You?

They Die.

Trying to find a way to strike up a conversation with a biker?  Perhaps, when did you start riding, might be a good place to start.

Or even better… Why do you ride?

We may stick around to tell you all about it!
